Josh Singer y Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), y Charles Randolph y Adam McKey (The Big Short), han sido los premiados por el sindicato de guionistas estadounidenses (WGA)en las categorías de mejor guión original y mejor guión adaptado, respectivamente. Además Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) fue el elegido en la categoría de documental.

El año pasado los ganadores fueron Wes Anderson y Hugh Guinness (The Grand Budapest Hotel) en guión original, y Graham Moore (The Imitation Game) en adaptado. Sólo el segundo recogió después el Oscar.
