Los Independent Spirit Awards son los premios anuales al cine independiente que otorga la Film Independent, una organización sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a la promoción del mismo. La ceremonia de entrega tiene lugar en la playa de Santa Mónica, y tradicionalmente se celebra la víspera de los Oscar, por lo que este año la fecha está fijada para el 3 de marzo de 2018.

Call Me By Your Name, con un total de seis nominaciones, lidera la lista de la 33ª edición. A la película de Luca Gudagnino la siguen Get Out (5), Good Time (5), Lady Bird (4), The Rider (4), I, Tonya (3) y Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (3).

Entre las ausencias más llamativas están las de The Shape Of Water, y su actriz protagonista, Sally Hawkins; la de Greta Gerwig en la categoría de mejor dirección; la de Wind River -distribuida por The Weinstein Company-; o la de Willem Dafoe, por su trabajo en The Florida Project.

Destacar también la presencia española entre las nominadas: Most Beautiful Island (Ana Asensio) y Life And Nothing More (Antonio Méndez Esparza), optan al Premio John Cassavettes. Además, Regina Williams, protagonista de la película de Méndez Esparza, también podría llevarse premio.
